Let’s Trash Western-centric Narratives and Tell Our Own Stories- Otumfuo to Caribbean

Asantehene Raises Alarm Over Hijacking of Media Profession by 'Professional Hustlers'

The Monarch of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has urged that Caribbean history and stories be told by the people themselves.

Addressing guests at the 2025 GUBA Awards and Dinner on November 12, 2025, in Bridgetown, Barbados, Otumfuo intimated that Western-centric narratives must be trashed.

According to the Asantehene, people of African descent must hijack their history by retelling it and passing it on to the next generation.

“The diaspora acts as a bridge between cultures, promoting African arts, music, food, fashion and other creative industries worldwide. Through such channels, the diaspora serves as cultural ambassadors promoting African culture.”

“They also serve as a vital cultural link promoting African heritage and narrative. It is time for us to tell our own stories and teach our own history and stop relying on the western-centric narratives that have, over the years, distorted our history and image.”

His Majesty is in Barbados on a three-day state visit.
