African Artists Need to be Appreciated- Otumfuo

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has underscored the need for artists of African descent to be afforded the same opportunities as their counterparts from the West.

This, he said can be done by showcasing their works in galleries and museums across the globe and opening opportunities to them on the global market.

At a lecture in the United Kingdom, he said, “African artists need to be appreciated. They have to be seen to be appreciated like all other artists, they can only be seen through museums and galleries. Opening the market to them and expanding the rate of opportunities to them should be part of the global conversation.”

He also called for collaboration among museums for development.

“I will urge the continuous pursuit of collaboration with the museums and advanced cultural institutions, renewed attention to attention to training and the Creative Arts and a vigorous effort to expand market opportunities for works of African artists.”

“The quest for restitution should be no reason for closing the market to our artists. On the contrary, it should point to the satellite of the value of African arts to museums and collectors for legitimate acquisition.”

His Majesty addressed an audience as the Guest Speaker at the British Museum on Friday, July 19, 2024.
