As Long As I Remain Chancellor, I Will Protect My Vice Chancellors- Asantehene Vows

The Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has taken a vow to throw his unflinching support for all Vice Chancellors he will work with.
The intent is to shield his VCs from all internal and external forces that may try to demoralise and derail their efforts in putting the university on the right foot.
“As long as I remain the Chancellor, I’m going to protect my Vice Chancellors, and I have to. For as long as I am the titular head of the university, I am going to protect my Vice Chancellors. I do that because I don’t want the university to be brought to disrepute at all.”
The Asantehene said this during a send-off party organised for Professor Kwasi Obiri-Danso, a former VC appointed as Ghana’s High Commissioner to India on October 5, 2025, by the King at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.
In his speech, King recollected the tenures of VCs he had worked with, including Prof. K. A. Andam, Prof. K. K. Adarkwa, Prof. W. O. Ellis, Prof. K. Obiri-Danso and Prof. (Mrs.) R. A. Dickson.
Otumfuo also acknowledged the tenure of Prof. J. S. K. Ayim at a time he had not yet assumed the mandate of Chancellor.
In the same spirit, the Chancellor was particular about the welfare of lecturers of the institution.
“I also charge my VCs to look after my lecturers and the professors who study, and therefore they know that if they don’t look after you, the lecturers, I will hold you responsible. Whether they have money or not, they have to look after you.”
The Asantehene counted himself blessed, seeing the numerous professors guiding the institution to a better ground.
“It’s a pleasure to see that I have so many professors. I realise that I am blessed to have these people who are holding my university together. All that you {past VCs and Provosts} have done to make this university one of the best universities in Ghana and Africa, I thank you. If I have any opportunity, I will honour you like I’m honouring him.”
Gracing the event was the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II and his wife.
