Asantehene Excludes Embattled Kontihene, Gyaasehene From Mamponghene Enstoolment Process

Asante Kingdom Marks Sixth Akwasidae In Black and Brown, Without Ornaments

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, has excluded the embattled Kontihene and Gyaasehene of the Asante Mampong Traditional Council from participating in the enstoolment process of the next chief.

This is part of the traditional guidelines provided by the king for the process.

Delivering them, Otumfuo noted that the Adontenghene, Kyidomhene, Ankobeahene, Akwamuhene and Nifahene would supervise the process.

“Gyaasehene and Kontihene should have been part of the process, but due to the outstanding issue, they will sit aside for the rest to conduct it.”

His Majesty instructed that the Queen, with the needed guidance, should identify a suitable candidate after considering requests and then present the name to the kingmakers.

“There is no need for rushing. Take your time, receive requests, go through them, and then select one. Once the name is presented to the kingmakers, they are to review and if they have any objection to it, they make it known and adduce legitimate reasons. If there is no objection, the enstoolment carries on.”

Otumfuo warned the kingmakers against taking advantage of the situation for their parochial interest as he stated, “You don’t have the power to choose a candidate.”

Meanwhile, the King warned the Kontihene and Gyaasehene to exercise restraint and make way for the processes to unfold.

“We can’t look at your issue here. Once a chief is enstooled, he will resolve the matter…I don’t want to hear of any form of violence as a result of the issue. Comport yourselves.”

Background
At the Asanteman Council meeting on Thursday, July 10, 2025, the attention of the Asantehene was drawn to two separate petitions submitted against the reigning Kontihene and Gyaasehene in Asante Mampong.

The petitions challenged their legitimacy to the positions they hold.

The first petition by one Kofi Appiah was submitted before Daasebre passed away. The Council was told the late chief guaranteed the needed attention when he was made privy to it.

The same petition was resubmitted for the attention of the Asantehene after the demise of Daasebre.

A second against the Gyaasehene by one Akwasi Addai was also later submitted.
