Athenaeum Club Treats Asantehene to a Dinner

The Athenaeum, a private members’ club in London in the United Kingdom (UK), was honoured to have wined and dined with the King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, as part of his visit to the European country this month.

The dinner was held at their famous Clubhouse at 107 Pall Mall, at the corner of Waterloo Place.

It was a private event that saw only a few guests joining for the treat on Wednesday, July 17, 2024.

The dinner was joined by the former President of Ghana His Excellency John Agyekum Kufuor, the Ghana High Commissioner to the UK, His Excellency Papa Owusu Ankomah and the representative of the King in the Negotiation process of looted Asante Artefacts, Mr Ivor Agyeman-Duah.

About the Club
The Athenaeum is a private members’ club in London, founded in 1824. Our nearly 2,000 members are drawn from a wide range of professional worlds including literature and the arts, education, the church, business, law, medicine and healthcare, public service, politics, science, architecture, engineering and technology.

Members come to exchange ideas, to read or research, to listen to talks by leading experts in their field or to meet friends or colleagues over lunch or dinner. They also come to enjoy concerts, talks, quizzes and films.

Awukudae
Earlier in the day, the King held a mini durbar to mark the fifth Awukudae Festival of the year at his Henley residence.

Present were traditional authorities including Oyokohene Nana Agyekum Ababio, Asamponghene Kwabena Owusu Korkoh, Dominasehene Baffour Yaw Boateng and Bebrehene Nana Atta Kyeremateng.

Otumfuo sat in state decked in a colourful Kente outfit and received homage from his subjects, Asante expatriates on foreign land. Among them was Asanteman UK and Ireland, an association of Asantes living abroad.

The King is in the UK among other things to deliver a lecture at the British Museum on Friday, July 19, 2024.

He is also expected to host the next Akwasidae Festival there.
