Family Heads Have No Power Over Queens- Asantehene

The Occupant of the Golden Stool, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has corrected misconception among royal families concerning powers of the family head within the Asante Kingdom.
Acknowledging the strategic nature of the position, His Majesty stated that family heads are not co-equals of Queens.
Otumfuo emphasised that family heads wield no power to challenge or destool queens.
He explained that they are only links between the royal family and the Queen.
This role, he educated, does not extend to kingmakers.
“Queen is enstooled with authority. She is a leader. The family head is a middleman between the Queen and family. He has no business with the Kingmakers. When there is vacancy, he assists the Queen to choose a successor. He is in no way superior to the queen.”
The Asantehene made these remarks during a Kumasi Traditional Council meeting on November 3, 2025, after hearing how the Family head of Asaamang had taken the law into his hands to perform rites that purportedly destooled the Queen.
His action was subsequently adjudged null and void after the necessary rites were performed by Nana Asamoah Gyamfi Sekyere II, Nsutahene.
