Govt Must Treat KNUST’s Understaffing Situation With Urgency- Asantehene

The Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has appealed to the government of Ghana to approach the unfavourable student-to-lecturer ratio of the institution with urgency.
The situation was brought sharply into focus by a recent five-year cyclical review of the university by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Otumfuo highlighted.
Addressing the 59th Congregation of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on November 29, 2025, Otumfuo emphasised that the situation lays a heavy strain on dedicated lecturers, threatening the quality of teaching and learning they provide.
“Madam Vice President, through you again, I call on your government to treat this matter with urgency and as a moral obligation, for it is not merely an equation of numbers, but the very future of our youth and nation.
“Our universities must be empowered not only to provide instructions but also the close guidance and mentorship that mould leaders, innovators and custodians of our nation’s destiny.”
Otumfuo therefore encouraged the government to grant the necessary financial clearance for the recruitment of additional academic and administrative staff for the University.
