How Asantehene Influenced Establishment Of AAMUSTED

It is no hidden truth that the Akufo-Addo-led government took the “bold” decision to convert the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) Campus in Tanoso into a fully-fledged Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) University.

But what many may not know is that Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is the brain behind its establishment.

The Akenteng Appiah-Minka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED) was once the College of Technology Education, Kumasi (COLTEK)- a campus of the University of Education, Winneba.

AAMUSTED was established on August 27, 2020, under Act 1026 of 2020 of the Parliament of the Republic of Ghana thanks to the constant advocacy by Otumfuo.

In his speech, the newly inducted Vice Chancellor of the TVET university recollected Otumfuo’s call nearly two decades ago.

“Otumfuo on 10th December 2005 advocated the upgrade of the College of Agriculture Education (CAGRIC), Asante-Mampong, into an autonomous teacher TVET Education University.”

The visionary monarch made the call during the first Congregation of the College.

Giving credit to His Majesty at his inauguration, Prof Kwaku Sarfo said, “We are happy the Nana Addo administration took the religious and historic step to grant autonomy to (COLTEK) and the College of Agriculture Education (CAGRIC).”

In his speech, Otumfuo who graced the event expressed his joy about the milestone.

“I am happy. My vision of seeing this campus upgraded to a full-fledged University became a reality in 2020 taking nearly 15 years of advocacy for it to happen.”

He highlighted, “I’m convinced today as I was 18 years ago that TVET is very important to the development of this nation. That is the way to go.”

According to him, it is vital to solving worsening unemployment in the country and around the globe.

The King also commended the government for heeding his call.

“I will join the management, staff and students of this University to commend highly His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his government for taking the bold step and establishing AAMUSTED with the mandate to train TVET and entrepreneurial development teachers for our country.

“I also thank the President for naming the University after Akenteng Appiah-Minka, one of the foremost industrial giants who established his industry in Kumasi to create employment and boost the local economy.”
