Otumfuo Commissions Police Station At KNUST
Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has commissioned a new police station at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
He commissioned it together with the Inspector-General of Police, Dr George Akufo Dampare and the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Rita Akosua Dickson on Friday, March 17, 2023.
The police station was among eight projects on the campus that needed either to be commissioned, unveiled or inspected by the Chancellor.
The station is situated at Kotei near the Jecaso Hostel.
According to the Chief Architect of KNUST, Mr Sarfo Kantanka, the management of the institution decided to put up a police post at the location after numerous armed robbery attacks against students who occupy the hostel were recorded.
“The initial motive was to build a police post but after we finished the building they said it suits a station and not a post”, he told opemsuo.com.
The Police Service in a Facebook post said the station will serve the university and surrounding communities to enhance the general security on the university campus.
Alongside, the KNUST Motorbikes Patrols was also launched as part of efforts by the Police Administration to improve police visibility and response to incidents on the university campus.
The initiative which was first enrolled at the University of Energy and Natural Resources in Sunyani is meant to ensure motorised police visibility on the campuses of the various universities.
This was after the 56th Congregation of the institution.
The monarch of the Asante Kingdom at the event commended the IGP for his exceptional leadership over the Service after describing him as “affable”.
“He is such an affable nice man”, the King testified of him.
He went on to say, “We also thank him for those initiatives and changes in the police force. Since he took over, I have been monitoring and I know that he is showing leadership and I’m sure all his members will follow him.”
