Nana Konadu Yiadom III: The 98-Year Journey of Asanteman’s Queen

Manhyia Palace Bans Funerals on August 21 for One-Week Observation of Asantehemaa

Born in 1927, Nana Konadu Yiadom III came into the world at the Benyaade Shrine in Meredane, a small town within Kwadaso, Kumasi.

She was the first daughter of Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II, who would later reign as Asantehemaa from 1977 to 2016, and Opanin Kofi Fofie—widely known as Koofie or Keewuo—a carpenter from Besease near Atimatim in Kumasi.

Her early childhood took a significant turn when, just over a year old and still breastfeeding, she was entrusted to her aunt, Nana Afia Konadu, in Ashanti New Town (Ash-Town), Kumasi. This change of guardianship shaped much of her upbringing.

Although she never attended formal school, Nanahemaa received a deep and disciplined informal education, acquiring practical knowledge and cultural wisdom far beyond the classroom. In her teenage years, she underwent traditional puberty rites alongside her niece, Nana Abena Ansa. She later married Opanin Kwame Boateng, a blacksmith from Aduman in Kumasi.

Known for her humility, kindness, firmness, and sense of justice, she was also a devout and hardworking leader. In the mid-1990s, a prophecy from Kwaku Firi Bosomfo, relayed through Baffour Akoto, Senior Linguist to the Asantehene, foretold she would one day be Queen of Asante—a prediction that came true.

Her reign has been marked by generosity and advocacy. The Saviour Church honoured her by naming the Nana Konadu Saviour School after her, recognizing her devotion to God’s work. She earned a reputation for settling disputes with fairness, ensuring all parties left satisfied.

Her passion for maternal health inspired her to launch an annual campaign encouraging breastfeeding, coupled with continued support for hospitals caring for mothers and infants.

On August 11, 2025, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, officially announced her passing during a meeting of the Asanteman Council. Addressing the chiefs and elders, the King shared the news of the death of the Asantehemaa—who was also his biological sister.

In keeping with Asante tradition, the one-week observation will take place at the Manhyia Palace on Thursday, August 21, 2025.
