Family Heads Can’t Destool Queens- Otumfuo

The King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has condemned a worrying trend of destoolments of traditional authorities by unauthorised persons.

One of such groups of people perpetuating these acts is family heads.

Setting the record straight, the King said family heads wield no power to destool a traditional leader.

“What insolence is that? That is against Asante tradition. A family head cannot destool a queen. He has no power,” the Asantehene said at a Kumasi Traditional Council meeting on November 3, 2025, after hearing a dispute relating to Asaamang.

“You went ahead to slaughter a sheep to purportedly destool a Queen because she rejected your choice of candidate for the male stool. Can she accept all requests?”

The Asantehene further affirmed that family heads wield no power at all.

His Majesty stated that he is only the link between the royal family and the Queen.

“Queen is enstooled with authority. She is a leader. The family head is a middleman between the Queen and family. He has no business with the Kingmakers. When there is vacancy, he assists the Queen to choose a successor. He is in no way superior to the queen.”
