Asantehene Encourages Nananom to Establish Customary Land Secretariats

Asantehemaa Dɔte Yie: Catch the Live Coverage of Day 3

The Monarch of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has encouraged traditional authorities to establish Customary Land Secretariats.

The Secretariat is a specialised office in Ghana aimed at improving land management and administration by serving as an interface between traditional authorities and statutory land agencies.

This formed part of the agenda of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs when they convened on December 19, 2025, with the Asantehene presiding.

His Majesty stated that the said office was essential and mandatory.

“The registrar spoke about the customary land secretariat. It is important and mandatory for all to get one. This is to prove lands under your care.”

His Majesty noted that its establishment will facilitate the receipt of annual revenues due to them from already leased lands.

“You will be entitled to ground rents. It is financially viable when you put your land documents in order. Every lease includes a ground rent. If we do that, the collection of this revenue becomes easy. So, although you might have sold all your lands, you will be receiving annual revenues.”

In addition, His Majesty stated that it will help deal with multiple land sales, eradicating land-related litigations.
