Asantehene Shares Story Behind Naming of Baworo in Ejisu Municipality

Baworo, a locality in Ejisu Municipality in the Ashanti Region, had its name as a result of a disturbing incident linked to Opemsuo Osei Tutu, the current occupant of the Golden Stool has recounted.

Per a narrative by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the name came about after a wife of the first Asantehene experienced an induced preterm birth at the place which was once known as Kokyereku.

According to Otumfuo, the pregnant wife of the King delivered her son prematurely in the course of a journey from Juaben when she made a stopover at the said community.

At the time, the community was led by one Boansi.

“When my pregnant wife who was travelling from Juaben got to Kokyereku, he {Boansi} failed to give her a resting place. The conditions caused her to give birth prematurely. My wife’s premature childbirth brought about the name Baworo.”

This infuriated the King to draw his sword against the community, taking over it.

“I warred against them and seized the land.”

Otumfuo shared the story behind the name ahead of Antoahene’s oath of allegiance swearing during a Kumasi Traditional Council meeting on February 24, 2025.
