Get Seedlings and Plant on Green Ghana Day- Asantehene to Nananom

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has directed all chiefs in his realm to involve themselves in the upcoming Green Ghana Day to enable the Ashanti Region to meet its target for the year.

His order came after the Forestry Commission on behalf of Samuel Abu Jinapor, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, formally informed him about this year’s edition which is slated for Friday, June 7, 2024.

The Commission led by former Deputy Minister, Hon Benito Owusu Bio made known their mission after paying their respects to the King who sat in state to receive guests during the observation of the Awukudae festival at the Manhyia Palace on June 5, 2024.

In his remarks, the Parliamentary representative of the Atwima-Nwabiagya constituency highlighted the outstanding performance of the Ashanti Region in the tree planting project in the past three years.

He implored His Majesty to assist with his influence to maintain the legacy built by the region in the initiative.

“Asanteman stands out in this project in all the years this has taken place. This year’s is coming up and we humbly request that Otumfuo uses his influence to make it successful as always,” he said.

This year, over 3 million seedlings have been reserved for the Ashanti Region, the Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, Mr Jacob Allotey said in his submission.

These seedlings include timber trees like wawa and mahogany, fruit trees, ornamental trees and ceremonial trees.

The Commission and District Assemblies will spearhead the distribution of these seedlings to all corners of the country, making it easily accessible, assured Mr Allotey.

Otumfuo thus charged traditional authorities to avail themselves for the exercise.

“Traditional Authorities must lead this charge. Get some of the seedlings and plant in your various jurisdictions. All the trees I have planted in the past three years have survived and are growing.”
