Otumfuo Announces Plan to Elevate Debibi to Paramountcy

The King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II says he intends to elevate Debibi, a traditional jurisdiction under his realm to a paramountcy.
This was when the newly enstooled chief of the town, Nana Amoako Gago II, visited the Manhyia Palace on February 10, 2025, to swear the oath of allegiance before the Occupant of the Golden Stool.
“I will admit you today and will elevate you tomorrow. This is my intention, and I make it known to you today,” Otumfuo announced.
Otumfuo counselled him to follow in the steps of his predecessor who made prompt appearances at all Council meetings and diligently served the Golden Stool.
Additionally, His Majesty advised him to stay humble.
He continued, “I will take your oath today…Debibi has a special role you play for Asanteman. I will tell you later after this.”

Debibi Withdrawal
In his remarks, Otumfuo recalled how Otumfuo Opoku Ware through war captured Debibi and made it part of Asante. At the time, it was known as Western Asante.
According to Otumfuo, one major motivation for Debibi’s withdrawal from Asante after former President Kwame Nkrumah demarcated the country into regions for administrative purposes was the poor treatment they endured whenever they came to serve the Golden Stool.
He said they were restrained from seeing the Asantehene by persons close to the King whenever they needed him.
“So they felt it was appropriate to stay away.”
Vow
Otumfuo said he made a vow to bring back all subject jurisdictions including Debibi who had withdrawn from serving the Golden Stool when he ascended it.
“When I ascended the Golden Stool, I made it my topmost objective to bring them all back into the fold. From here to Boadikrom, Sampa, Seikwa and all others are part of Asante.”
