Otumfuo Reveals How Antoa Stool Originated

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has shed light on the series of events that led to the establishment of the Antoa Stool.

Before admitting Nana Kwaku Ware III’s oath of allegiance on February 24, 2025, the Asantehene waded into the origin of the Antoa Stool to enlighten him about the enormity of the position.

His Majesty noted that it was established as Opemsuo Osei Tutu’s token of appreciation to Sarkodie Deteh, who became the first Antoahene.

In a narrative, he said Sarkodie was a descendant of Ampoma, the daughter of one Amoanim.

The gentleman, His Majesty recounted, played a crucial role in Opemsuo’s journey to becoming the first Asantehene.

According to him, after the Kwamang stool became vacant, Kenyasehene refused to take up the position, putting the town in a dire situation.

“I wouldn’t be here if not for Sarkodie Deteh. When calamity struck and someone was needed to ascend the Kwamang Stool, the Kenyaasehene was beseeched to take charge of the town. However, he refused, claiming he was attending to his groundnut farm.”

The timely intervention of Sarkodie led to the enstoolment of Opemsuo as Kwamanhene and subsequently as the Asantehene.

“That was when Sarkodie Deteh came forward and announced that there was someone who had been sent to Denkyira for training but now resided at Akwamu. He led a delegation to bring me. The Kenyaasehene could have held the position I occupy today, but it was not his destiny, so he had no interest in it.”

To express gratitude to Sarkodie, Opemsuo established the Antoa Stool for him and shared some of his regalia with him.

“That was how Opemsuo expressed gratitude to Antoa. He also shared some of his outfits and regalia with Antoa but charged him to use them only at Antoa.”

Otumfuo further noted that the Antoa Stool is no less significant, as it is one of the four stools within the Kingdom, alongside Poduo—a special stool created by Komfo Anokye.

“The reason the Antoa Stool is no less significant is that it was among the four stools for which the High Priest established Poduo—Adonteng, Bantama, and Bantama Baamu being the others. You now understand the greatness of the position we are entrusting to you. It is no less a stool.”
