Our Education Must be Reviewed to Align with our Socio-economic Needs- Otumfuo

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has called for pragmatic steps in reviewing the country’s current education system to meet the social and economic needs of the country.

He wondered whether the needed skilled labour is being produced by the various technical and vocational institutions to take over the industrial sector of the economy.

“It remains the sole issue whether our education system is producing the skills needed to keep business and industry moving. However we may try to refocus education, but it will be of no avail unless it turns the national economy into good shape.

“It remains incontrovertible that only the state can deliver the resources needed to achieve the goal of education for all and only a strong resilient and sustainable economy can generate the needed resources.”

He indicated that the misalignment between the education system and the needs of the economy places the country at a vulnerable end.

His Majesty also noted that despite the country’s numerous elites steering the various critical sectors of the economy, it is found in distress.

“When I hear the endless orientations about our economy being in distress, when I see our legislature unable to agree on national interest, when I’m told about the declining public confidence in law enforcement, I can’t help asking myself ‘is that all education can deliver for all our investments and all our sacrifices?’”

His Majesty said this while delivering a speech on the education sector at the University of Cape Coast in the Central Region where he was conferred with his 10th honorary doctorate degree on September 5, 2024.
