Sagrenti War: Manhyia Palace Hosts Kuntunkuni Durbar

The Manhyia Palace is hosting a durbar as part of events to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Sagrenti War between the Asantes and British colonial leaders.

Named after the traditional mourning cloths of the Asantes, Kuntunkuni, the durbar will be used to mourn the over 4,000 Asante soldiers who perished in the war as well as the ravages the war had on the entire city of Kumasi.

Asanteman will thus mull over the impact of the war after more than a century.

The event is taking place at the Dwabrem grounds in the Manhyia Palace.

Already, traditional rulers have begun arriving either by foot or in palanquins under either black or red parasols and accompanied by their compatriots.

Paramount chiefs, paramount queen mothers and heads of Kumasi Traditional Council Divisions have the privilege of riding to the durbar grounds in their palanquins.

Asokore Mamponghene Nana Boakye Ansah Debrah arrived at the venue led by two sword-bearing traditional guards and followed by a group of “atumpan” drummers.

The arrival of His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the King of the Asante Kingdom at the durbar will mark the end of the entry of all other chiefs.

The event organized by the Durbar sub-committee did not ignore the security for guests and the general public.

Police officers can be spotted from all corners in the Palace precincts.

With these measures in place, attendees are assured of the utmost security from theft, violence and other unforeseen incidents.

Uncertainties do happen but with the proactive arrangements put in place for the event, all emergency health needs of attendees are guaranteed.

A temporary sick bay with experienced medical officers has been established to provide prompt medical attention to anyone who may need it.

Traditional Displays
There are more than five traditional musical groups to perform odes.

Another aspect of the event is the display of spiritual gymnastics by fetish priests and priestessess who have been designated a stand on the grounds.
