Otumfuo Orders Swift Resolution to Onwe Dispute

How Asantehene Touted Ghana's Labour Force to Austria

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, has directed that the prolonged dispute at Onwe involving Abusuapanin Opuni Marfo, the Onwe Aheneyere, and the Dikro of Ahodwo be resolved without further delay.

Addressing a sitting of the Kumasi Traditional Council on October 20, 2025, His Majesty stressed that the matter was not one of chieftaincy but rather about establishing the rightful ownership.

He emphasised that the case had lingered for far too long and must be concluded promptly to restore peace and unity within the community.

“This issue is not about chieftaincy but about who truly owns the land. The matter has dragged on for some time and must be resolved quickly.”

Background to the Dispute

The Onwe dispute is twofold. It began when Abusuapanin Opuni Marfo invoked the Great Oath against the Aheneyere, insisting that the Onwe Stool belongs to the Aduana clan. Unfortunately, the Abusuapanin passed away while the case was still before the Asantehene.

Adding to the complexity, another man has claimed to be the Dikro of Ahodwo — an area believed to be a suburb of Onwe — asserting that Ahodwo is independent and not part of Onwe. Reports indicate that he has even submitted a land layout to the local assembly.

During the hearing, Otumfuo was informed that these conflicting claims have created significant confusion and tension.

Burial of the Late Abusuapanin

His Majesty also directed that the late Abusuapanin, who invoked the Great Oath, be buried without further delay. He expressed concern that the prolonged dispute has prevented his burial for over two years, describing the situation as unacceptable.

Otumfuo urged all parties involved to cooperate fully to ensure a peaceful and just resolution to the matter.
