We Need More Medals- Otumfuo On African Games

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is looking forward to Ghanaian athletes reaching the stars at the 13th African Games set to be hosted in the country beginning on March 8.

He looks forward to winning more medals in the competition which will feature 29 sports.

The occupant of the Golden Stool made this known to the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the African Games on March 4, 2024, while pouring his frustrations at what has become of the country’s athletics in the past years.

“Marathons and all other athletics went down and I hope you use this opportunity to give it the popularity it needs. There used to be what was called Inter-Schools which saw all these sports bring out the country’s great athletes to represent the country at international competitions.

“Help us to restore the glory of the country in sports. We used to have the likes of Nsiah Asare. Ghana used to be fierce on the sports front but we cannot boast of that today.”

At the Games, he expressed his anticipation to see the country win a lot of medals and prove to the world what Ghana has got.

“We Need a lot of medals.”

Sports like armwrestling, athletics, beach volleyball, boxing, cricket, football, handball, hockey, judo, karate, rugby, volleyball, weightlifting, basketball, taekwondo, mixed martial arts, speedball, sambo, teqball and more will feature in the African Games.

The competition will end on March 23, 2024.

A delegation led by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon Simon Osei Mensah, included Dr. Kwaku Ofosu-Asare, the LOC Executive Chairman, along with LOC members Ibrahim Adjei Sowah, Kwesi Mantey, and Reks Brobbey, who were present at the Manhyia Palace on Monday.
